A Message from Dr. John Tata
We
at Hartford Walking Systems realize that you want and deserve the most up to
date, clear and concise information about the rapidly changing field of walking
assist devices.
Every day amputees are facing physical, psychological and social challenges. As
a practicing radiologist for over 25 years I had little direct interaction with
the world of the amputee; that is until my brother-in-law Peter (and HWS
President, Joe Schrader's cousin) required a BK amputation because of a clotting
disorder. It was at that time that the challenges and obstacles amputees face
every day became a real part of my world. Peter presented a unique set of
challenges for Joe Schrader. A redesigned LegSim enabled him to use the device
in spite of paralysis on his left side and blindness in his left eye. You can
read more about him under the "Case Studies" section and view his videos.
The Physician Portal has been expanded to include articles and case
studies and the many complications faced when individuals become
immobile. I invite our professional colleagues to contribute to this forum so
that we can all learn and benefit from our shared experiences.
In order to help you navigate the complex world of reimbursement for assist
devices, I have added an article on "How to Write a Letter of Medical
Necessity." It provides you and your health care provider with valuable insights
into the information insurance carriers and Medicare use in the evaluation and
decision process. The team has made great strides with national insurance
carriers including TRICARE which now will cover the cost of the LegSim.
We continue to partner with researchers to better understand how the
biomechanics of the LegSim affect wear and tear on joints while at the same time
providing a more independent lifestyle. We will update you as the outcomes of
this research become available.
Hartford Walking Systems remains committed to you: our prospective patients,
healthcare providers, physical therapists and prosthetists. If there are topics
you would like us to address, please contact me at

Respectfully,
John A. Tata, MD
